LFB (France) 4/2008 - Montpellier 86, Union Hainaut 73 (OT)

Oh Khadijah, why must you do this to L'Union Hainaut?

In front of a massive crowd of 500 people (corporations sponsor teams in Europe so low attendance isn't out of the ordinary), Union Hainaut (3-1) ran into its first defeat of the year on the road against Montpellier with an 86-73 overtime loss in an exciting game that made those Montpellier fans feel very fortunate indeed.

French accounts of the game described it as a battle, with three players from Union Hainaut - Chioma Nnamaka, Clémence Beikes and Bintou Dieme - all fouled out.

Six players for Union Hainaut would score in double figures, and the team shot at 41 percent overall. Chioma Nnamaka scored 11 points before fouling out. (I almost think I'm writing this story from an alternate universe.) Bernadette Ngoyisa had nine rebounds and 10 points, just one rebound away from a double-double. Tiffany Stansbury, the former forward for the Lynx, also had 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Sheanna Mosch led Montpellier with 21 points and Khadijah Whittington was second with 18 points. Whittington also had six steals.

Unfortunately for Hainaut, Montpellier shot 55 percent from the field as compared to the 41 percent of Union Hainaut. Hainaut stayed in the game with 16 offensive rebounds, but also led in turnovers 20-14.

The game was tied 39-39 at the half. Montpellier took a 57-51 lead after three quarters, but Hainaut staged a comeback to bring it to a 71-71 tie in regulation. Montpellier would then blow out Union Hainaut 15-2 in the overtime period. The fouls really hurt Union Hainaut.

The final boxscore is here.

It was a joke about the massive ground, they were expecting a full house at Montpellier 1500 so the turn out was disappointing
