Houston Comets Cease Operations

The very sad news is here.

I never remarked on it, but today is the first day that teams can actually talk to players to whom they hold the rights but have not signed. In effect, December 1st is the first day of the 2009 season.

The article states that on December 8, 2008, the dispersal draft will take place. Undoubtedly, Atlanta will have the first pick in that draft. But to paraphrase what someone once said, "I'd rather there be a Houston Comets team than for there to be a dispersal draft where the Dream got the first pick."

Major shock.

Agree. Sad stuff for the league and Houston, but part of the early days of any sports league unfortunately and also a sign of the bad economy as well.

Silver lining for Dream is ability to pick up Lyttle in the dispersal and then get Snow as UFA. Transforms the team overnight to much faster and more agile team. And probably means Katie and Alison are looking for new homes.

Not sure if this means WNBA-Dallas, but I'm pretty annoyed by that article. "Too late to start in another city"? How so? To find an owner to keep the team in Houston? Or too late to get another team up and running before June 2009?

And either way, why is it too late? Seems like this could have been handled much, much better, but that's my annoyed kneejerk reaction.

This has been one of the most epic clusterfucks I've ever seen, from the moment Les Alexander sold the team to this very second. The league dropped the ball straight down the Mariana Trench, and it's the fans who're getting screwed.

Orender clearly can't handle adversity.
