Lehning Out For The Season?

According to two posters on the Atlanta Dream Message Board, Lehning suffered a Type IV shoulder separation. There are six types of shoulder separation; this type has a displacement of the clavicle behind the acromioclavicular joint for those of you taking notes and in Lehning's case it involves ligament damage. She'll have surgery on Tuesday, followed by 4 to 5 months of rehab. (The types are not ordered in ascending severity; they merely describe six categories of injury.) Without having direct knowledge, I suspect that the surgery will be arthroscopic surgery.

Forget the playoffs. Hopefully, the rehab won't interfere with her studies at Kansas State where she finishes her degree. We'll have Lehning back next season.

The argument all season from a vocal segment of Dream fans is that Ivory Latta is the better point guard. Well, if there's any time to prove that assertion, it's now, because the playoffs start in Detroit on Wednesday.

I used to be the biggest Shalee Lehning hater out there. Ivory Latta is a MUCH better ball handler and shorter. However, there's something that Shalee has that Ivory doesn't. Other than the fact that she is head and shoulders a better rebounder than Latta, she never takes a bad shot. (Heck...she never takes any shots lol). During crunch time, I'd rather have Ivory on the floor because she can make things happen, but during the course of the game, Shalee's presence will be missed.

No matter who you root for, it's always sad to see a player go down with a serious interesting.

Hope she gets better soon!

Ivory is a better scorer. No doubt about it, and here's hoping she nails Detroit for 22 per game!

But Ivory is not a better ball handler. Watch her next game and pray she avoids "interrupted dribble" violations as she carries the ball really badly because she simply dribbles too high. All players carry it now, but Ivory can't keep her dribble below her head often. If she can do that and not turn it over the Dream will survive the tough loss of Shalee.

Shalee is a fighter. She will attack her rehab as soon as she can. I can confirm that what has been posted is true - Shalee will have surgery on Tuesday. Her mother has flown to Atlanta to be with her. I'm sure that Shalee is devastated that she is missing the playoffs as I know she was very excited about the Dream's achievements this season and the fact that they made the playoffs.

Thanks for the additional information about separated shoulder injuries. I learned a lot from the explanation!

Sure, Lehning doesn't put up any big numbers save assists, and Ivory comes through with three-pointers more consistently than anybody else on the squad right now. And Latta's got energy and intensity in spades, which is undoubtedly why they brought her back mid-season.

As a true play-setter, Lehning runs circles around Latta. She is CALM and SMART. She earned her starting spot because Atlanta executes plays with more confidence with Shalee in the game. And going into the playoffs for the first time, going against the defending league champions who are going to play like they have something to prove, going with the whole world expecting your squad to fall flat on your face, Atlanta will NEED that confidence and that inner calm.

Even if she isn't in the game, I hope she can bring that to her teammates from the bench.
