Marynell Meadors Makes the New York Times

From this article in the New York Times, written by the AP:

Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris, Louisville’s Angel McCoughtry and Connecticut’s Renee Montgomery — all of whom will be playing in the Final Four this weekend — are expected to be among the top selections, along with Maryland’s Kristi Toliver and Marissa Coleman.

“I think those are the top five or six players,” said Atlanta Dream Coach Marynell Meadors, whose team has the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft on Thursday.

Okay, so we know the first pick next week will be either Courtney Paris, Angel McCoughtry, Renee Montgomery, Kristi Toliver or Marissa Coleman. That narrows it down.

More words from Meadors regarding the off-season roster changes:

“We’ve gotten pretty good in a short period of time, we just got to get everybody playing together,” Meadors said. “I’ve got to have some young backup people that are ready to step in. We’re mainly focusing on the guard situation first to try to have better players in that area.”

Hmmm. Is Marynell trying to feint everyone out on that first pick?

My guess is that Marynell will keep the top pick and choose between Renee Montgomery, Angel McCoughtry, and Marissa Coleman, choosing Montgomery. She could trade down to get any of the other two players because they just don't have that kind of value.

Interesting comment, and I think it's the first time that anyone has mentioned that Renee Montgomery would be the #1 pick. Generally, the Dream hasn't been seen as needing point guards and as needing more help at the forward position.

It would definitely be great for the Dream if they could pick up both Montgomery AND McCoughtry, but the Dream has some cap space problems that will make that impossible.
