Whatever Happened to Etta Maytubby?

If you thought Madinah Slaise's picture was small....

While there are no overseas games going on (the last Dream left playing overseas is Erika de Souza), and with me a bit under the weather, I've been trying to add to my database of ABL statistics and I came across a strange name: "Etta Maytubby".

Like many ABL players, I don't have a date of birth on Etta Maytubby, but I've find out a few things about her. She was a forward out of the University of Oklahoma in 1996, where she was one of the few women to break the 1,000 point club at Oklahoma.

My understanding is that she didn't play long. She was a member of the 1996-97 Richmond Rage team that had Jackie Joyner-Kersee. She shot 40 percent from the field - not good numbers for a forward. Maytubby only hit 8 out of 13 freethrows and didn't have a lot of offensive rebounds. I believe that the 1996-97 season was her last in the ABL.

Maytubby then became a patrol officer with the Moore, Oklahoma police department for eighteen months. She was then quoted on an anti-polygraph website sometime in 2001. (The news article the site quoted is broken.) She attempted to apply for the Edmund, Oklahoma police department in 2001 but failed a polygraph test on past drug use. Maytubby stated that she had never failed a drug test in college and offered to provide hair follicles or provide further testing, but Police Chief Dennis Cochran (this was 2001, so he might not be there any more) stated that they weren't interested in hiring her after the failed test. This led to Maytubby suing the department, claiming that the polygraph test was being used to unfairly screen out black, female applicants.

At that time, she was 28 years old. She returned to basketball, playing for the North Harbor Breeze in New Zealand in 2002 and for Peli-Karhut of the Finnish League for the remainder of the 2002-03 season.

For a long time, Maytubby was Oklahoma's leading 3-point shooter, until Erin Higgins hit her 175th 3-point shot as a Sooner in January of 2006. After that, Etta Maytubby disappears off the map.

Wherever you are Etta, I hope that life is treating you well.

UPDATE, October 21 2009: As you might read in the comments, the post above caused no small bit of distress to Ms. Maytubby's friends and immediate family.

Pleasant Dreams apologizes for any implication that Ms. Maytubby ever used drugs or was involved with them in any way. Any reader drawing such an implication would be incorrect in doing so. As the writer, I am the one at fault regardless of my intent to the contrary. Pleasant Dreams apologizes and wishes to leave no doubt in anyone's mind of the truth of the facts which can be found in Ms. Maytubby's reply in the comments section.

I've exchanged a few e-mails with the subject of this post and hope to create a new post soon with more information, past and present. But you won't find it here - you'll find it in the "front" of the blog. As soon as the post is written - and meets Ms. Maytubby's approval - I'll link to it from here.

I'm Etta V. Maytubby born April 28, 1973! And who are you? About the Edmond Police Officer situation: Chief Cochran, resigned because I did sue him, but I wasn't the first! Another African American sued him first because he hung ropes in his locker and refused to pay him overtime and this janitor had been there for 20 years! Oh yeah and he endeared racial jokes by the CHIEF! I was asked to be a witness in the beginning, then I asked the attorny if I had a case. At first I wasn't real sure, but at my deposition hearing many things came out about this racist person. In 10 years as a Chief of Edmond, OK he hired one black person in the 90's and that person was either fired or he quit! As for the polygragh! I'll break it down for you like this, I'VE NEVER BEEN DRUNK OR HIGH IN MY LIFE! No weed, No marijuana, No coke, No crack, not even cigarettes, this is why I was upset with the polygragh results! Of course my results was negative at the University of Oklahoma. I didn't party there and I was there for 5 years, partying was not for me! I liked chilling! It didn't make since to me to act foolish! Its like you tried to make me look bad and it upset my little sister and I don't appreciate that. Maybe next time try to get in touch with someone first and get the real story. When I first read your little article I wasn't upset then I was thinking about what if someone actually read this, I live a blessed life for a reason, I don't want my name to be used negatively! I enjoy law enforcement because I want to be there for people! I'm living in Dallas with my beautiful girlfriend, she has 3 kids and I have 3 God kids! I'm extremely blessed! I've applied for Dallas PD and Fort Worth PD, I'm hoping to get hired on at one of these agencies.
If you ever decide to write about me again please be more accurate with your info.
In 1990 my mom died of uterine cancer this was my senior year in high school. In 1991 my house burned down I lost everything! Also, in 1991 my High School team lost the State Tournament by 1 point, that was hard to deal with also.
ABL, I agree I didn't do so good, but I enjoyed myself and learned alot. In 1997 I tore my ACL and MCL and had reconstruction surgery.
Both coaches that coached me at the University of Oklahoma passed away, one in 2009 and the other 2008 i think. My University of Oklahoma ties are not good, I hate that but I can't do anything about that.
The people around me are the ones that truly know me and that is all that really matters. If you need more info or someone wants to know me my email address is: finehooper32@yahoo.com or e.maytubby@gmail.com
And you have a wonderful day!

I don't know who you are or what reasoning you have to write this article. The things you write are hurtful and totally out of line. If you want to write an article about Etta, why don't you get to know her. Ask her questions.. I have know Etta for over 26 years and she is one of the most stand up people I know. I remember all of the allegations on Etta. Her and I spoke about this many times. The fact is..she never used drugs and never failed a drug test. If you want a story on Etta....how about how she preservered as a child (16)when her mother died and raised her little sister.. That is the person people need to know...not the one you painted her out to be.

I'd like to know your purpose in writing about Etta. If the purpose was to inform, then you should make sure that you are writing the whole truth. If it wasn't to inform, then it was for purposes of gossip, and that is how this article appears to me.

Etta happens to be a wonderful, generous, and giving person. She is also a talented athlete and I am truly honored to play at her side. She uses her gifts to make others better, and to make the world better.

I would hope that in the future you would take the time to learn more about a person before you write about them. You owe Etta and her friends and family an apology. I hope you are strong enough to do the right thing. Etta always has been.

If you had any idea what kind of person Etta was, you never would have written, such terrible, mean-spirited things. Are you familiar with Defamation, Libel and Slander laws? I would suggest you check into that, just as you need to thoroughly check and recheck your information before you put it to print. Etta is one of the most amazing people I have ever met. She has overcome adversities like no other, so no doubt, she will overcome the trash you have written about her. Proud to be a friend of Etta, Cynthia Hanna
