TBBL 3/2009 - Mersin 84, Kayseri 82

For the first time in a long time, Ivory Latta got to say hello to her old Atlanta Dream teammate Tamera Young. (As well as 2008 teammate Kasha Terry.) This time, they would be on the opposite sides of the battle, with each team hoping to get over .500. Latta was the number one scorer for Mersin (2-1) and Young tied for the top scorer for Kayseri (1-2), but it looks like Mersin squeaked by with the win at home, 84-82.

The box score is here. Usually, the Turkey Women's Basketball League will at least have a write-up, and some pictures. I think this is the very first time I've seen a box score without a write-up. And of course, no pictures, as those usually come a day later.

So all we have is the box score. Seems like it was a close game. It was Kayseri that came up on top in the first quarter, leading 22-15 over Mersin, one of the heavyweights of the TBBL. Mersin would have to scrap their way back, and were only down by three points at halftime, 42-39.

Coming out of the first half, Mersin outscored visiting Kayseri 25-19 to take a 64-61 lead into what must have been a hard-fought fourth quarter, but Mersin came out on top.

Let's look at the Four Factors of the game:

Field goal percentage: Kayseri 49 percent, Mersin 46 percent. However, Mersin took 71 shots compared to Kayseri's 51. Mersin was 12-for-22 from the 3-point range.
Turnovers: Kayseri 17, Mersin 19. Almost even.
Offensive rebound percentage: Mersin 31 percent, Kayseri 11 percent. Another big edge for Mersin, as Kayseri only had three offensive rebounds.
Free throws: Kayseri 23-for-29, Mersin 6-for-8. This is where Mersin almost lost the game - on the free throw line. Mersin committed 22 fouls in the game (and Sariye Gokce fouled out); Kaseri only committed 13.

And now, the game performances:

Mersin

Ivory Latta: 24 points, 6 assists. She was only 3-for-11 from 2-point range, but a deadly 5-for-6 from behind the 3-point arc.
Erlana Larkins: 10 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists. Larkins's double-double was not the only one of the game.
Barbara Turner: 10 points, 4 rebounds.
Olympia Scott: 8 points, 6 rebounds. 4 turnovers.

Kayseri

Latoya Pringle: 18 points, 13 rebounds, for the other double-double. 6-for-13 overall shooting, and five turnovers.
Tamera Young: 18 points, 4 steals. 7-for-10 overall shooting. A very pleasant performance.
Julie McBride: 16 points, but 6 turnovers. The Syracuse grad briefly played for the Chicago Sky in their inaugural year.
Kasha Terry: 6 points and 3 rebounds in 14 minutes of play.

Kasha Terry Added to Storm Training Camp Roster

From the Seattle Storm website:

SEATTLE - Seattle Storm Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Brian Agler announced today the addition of 6-3 center Kasha Terry and 5-9 guard Melanie Thomas to the Storm’s 2009 training camp roster.

Terry, selected by the Indiana Fever in the second round (26th overall pick) of the 2006 WNBA Draft, played in 20 games for the Atlanta Dream and two games for the Indiana Fever in 2008, averaging 4.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Terry holds career averages of 3.1 points and 2.4 rebounds in three WNBA seasons. The Georgia Tech graduate was a member of the All-ACC Tournament team in 2005 and an All-ACC Rookie team honorable mention in 2003.

I'm glad that Kasha Terry still has a chance in the WNBA, and that she's landed on her feet.

Atlanta Dream Waives Kasha Terry

The news was right here. Under my nose, all along. It wasn't reported on the WNBA Transactions Board, I don't remember seeing it posted at RebKell and it isn't on the Atlanta Dream Message Board. Unless season-ticket holders got the news, this might be the first time anyone's heard about it. At least, I'd like to think so. Maybe I'm just clueless.

So Kasha Terry goes from being out of a job in Poland to out of a job...period. Egad. And it only took me a week to find out.

P. S.: Now I know why it went unnoticed. It was probably overlooked in all the hoop-la over Betty Lennox being waived and Lisa Leslie retiring.

Kasha Terry Out at Utex Row Rybnik in Poland

Once again, a member of the Atlanta Dream is unemployed. Kasha Terry and LaTangela Atkinson's contracts with Utex Row Rybnik have been terminated.

It wasn't anything that Terry or Atkinson did. The club has no money to pay them. The notice:

Club Koszykarski ROW Rybnik Sp. z oo advises that in view of the financial problems that affect our advertisers and sponsors of the club are forced to introduce a savings plan in the season 2008/2009. The introduction of savings is intended to preserve and maintain the club at the level of women's basketball in Rybnik ekstraklasy in the following years.

Utex Row is looking into sponsorship to help them financially. They hope to keep Ketia Swanier on the team and are working towards some kind of arrangement.

Club president Adam Greczyło said, "We need this, because we do not want to end the season with 200 debt or 300 thousand." Part of the problem is that the American players are paid in dollars, and Polish currency has fallen against the dollar.

I guess all I can say to Kasha Terry is "welcome back" and it's a shame that your experience in Poland got cut short. As for Atlanta Dream fans, we know that Kasha Terry and Tamera Young will be rested up, at the least....

Tickets were booked for Terry and Atkinson for a flight on Saturday. Undoubtedly, they are on their way home.

PLKK 16/2008 - Polkowice 76, Rybnik 74

With regular league play not resuming until January 21st, Rybnik (10-6) wanted to go into the break with a win. With Polkowice (11-4) visiting, the game looked good for the Rybniki for three quarters, but Polkowice came back in the fourth quarter to steal a 76-74 win.

The loss knocks Rybnik to fifth place in the league. Polkowice moves up to fourth place, 1 1/2 games head of Rybnik.

Polkowice won the first quarter, but Rybnik came back on its home ground, leading 41-36 at halftime. Both teams fought evenly in the third, and the gap remained unchanged after the third quarter with Rybnik still up by five, 60-55. However, Polkowice held to Rybnik to just 14 points in the final quarter, and accoring to a (very) brief writeup, a decisive rebound by Polkowice with 15 seconds left sealed the game for the visitors.

Rybnik actually had better shooting than Polkowice - Rybnik shot slightly over 50 percent from the floor, whereas Polkowice scored 41 percent. Both teams rebounded evenly, but Polkowice won the battle of offensive rebounds 10-8...and who knows, maybe one of those offensive rebounds was the one that won the game. What killed Rybnik's shooting advantage were deficiencies in the other parts of the game. Rybnik turned the ball over 21 times and sent Polkowice to the free throw line thirty-one times. Granted, Polkowice only hit 15 of those 31 giveaways, but you rarely send your opponent to the line that much and walk away with a win.

For Rybnik, Natalia Trafimava scored 10 points and picked up seven rebounds, and was probably the player of the game for Rynik. Ketia Swanier scored 21 points and had six rebounds and five assists...but turned the ball over eight times. She had six turnovers in her last game, and I suspect that she's fallen victim to Europe's dribbling rules. Kasha Terry scored 14 points and eight rebounds. She shot 6-for-11 from the field, but unfortunately, shot 6-for-11 from the free throw line. LaTangela Atkinson only scored two points and had six rebounds, but six turnovers as well.

Jillian Robbins, who graduated from Tulsa in 2007, scored 19 points and had 13 rebounds for a double-double for Polkowice. Amisha Carter, who played briefly for both the Shock and the Liberty, scored 14 points and 12 rebounds for the second Polkowice double-double. Daria Mieloszyńska scored 17 points and seven rebounds as well.

Hopefully, either the Rybnik fans or the Polkowice fans will post some pictures soon.

PLKK 15/2008 - Rybnik 74, Jelenia Góra 67 (OT)

Next week, on December 20th, all PLKK teams play a regular league game - then, the league takes almost a month off! Rybnik (10-5) gives itself an early Christmas present by going on the road and beating Jelenia Góra (6-8) in overtime, 74-67.

According to the writeup, the score started out 7-7, but Rybnik quickly took a seven point lead, 17-10, which they carried to the end of the first quarter. Jelenia Góra managed to close the gap to four points at haltime, 40-36. However, Jelenia Góra held Rybnik to 11 points in the third quarter, with Katariny Ristic scoring a 3-pointer to put Jelenia Góra up 51-50, a lead they extended to 55-51 at the end of the third.

However, LaTangela Atkinson turned it on, and almost singlehandledly led the team back to a 61-61 tie. With four seconds left in the game, Magdalena Gawrońska of Jelenia Góra scored a bucket to tie the game 65-65 at regulation. Unfortunately for Jelenia Góra, they would be held to a grand total of two points in the overtime period.

On the face of shooting percentage alone, you'd think this would be an easy win: Rybnik shot 52 percent compared to Jelenia Góra's 39 percent. However, Jelenia Góra sank almost as many buckets as Rybnik (they just sank more baskets) and outhustled Rybnik in offensive rebounds, 10-5. Rybnik would turn the ball over 16 times and only shoot 61 percent at the free throw line.

Ryan Coleman, a graduate of Eastern Michigan, scored 15 points and 10 rebounds for Jelenia Góra. A player of American nationality named Hollie Meredith - I don't know if she played ball only in Poland or has played some American b-ball - scored 10 points and seven rebounds. Magdalena Skorek scored 13 points and five rebounds.

As for Rybnik, LaTangela Atkinson was the clear hero, scoring 26 points for the visitors. Aleksandra Chomać would score 15 points and eight rebounds. Nataliya Trafimava would only score eight points but have 14 rebounds, one bucket short of a double-double.

Ketia Swanier scored 12 points and three rebounds. Kasha Terry would only play eight minutes and score five points without any rebounds.

Maybe they'll be some pictures posted. We know that the Rybnik ladies make great calendar girls!

PLKK 14/2004 - AZS Poznań 64, Rybnik 54

Utex Row Rybnik (9-5) was sitting on a six-game winning streak and hoping to keep the good times rolling, particularly when AZS Poznań (7-6) showed up. In their last match, Rybnik went to Poznań and rolled to a 102-88 victory. Unfortunately, AZS Poznań earned their revenge and beat Rybnik by ten points at Rybnik.

AZS Poznań got off to a good start with a 20-13 first quarter and managed to take a 34-29 lead into halftime. However, Rybnik had the momentum in the third quarter, holding AZS Poznań to just nine points and claiming a 44-43 lead after three quarters. The question would be 'which team would want it more in the fourth quarter?' The answer would clearly be AZS Poznań, who held Rybnik to just 10 fourth quarter points. Magdalena Radwan got hurt and Kasha Terry was ineffective in the fourth quarter. According to the Utex Row Rybnik website, Rede Aleliunaite-Jankovską proceeded to beat the crap out of Kasha Terry under the basket all day - including when Terry returned in the fourth quarter. Terry was held scoreless in her limited minutes.

It was a poor shooting game for both teams - AZS Poznań shot 36 percent and Rybnik only shot 33 percent. AZS Poznań won the offensive rebounding battle, scoring 12 offensive boards to Rybnik's seven. Both teams hit the same number of free throws.

It was turnovers that killed Rybnik. AZS Poznań managed to turn the ball over just eight times, compared to 17 for Rybnik.

LaTangela Atkinson was the player of the game. She scored 22 points and 10 rebounds - but she also had seven turnovers. Ketia Swanier scored six points and nine rebounds, and Aleksandra Chomać scored 10 points and six rebounds. Kasha Terry scored zero points, but got six rebounds in 11 minutes of play.

For AZS Poznań, Reda Aleliunaite-Jankowska led all players with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Okeisha Howard, a graduate of Old Dominion, scored 11 points and eight rebounds. Joanna Walich scored 15 points and five rebounds for AZS Poznań.

Better late than never.

PLKK 13/2008 - Rybnik 68, Cukierki 65

The second half of the Polish League season is on its way, and Utex Row Rybnik (9-4) would like home field advantage in the eventual playoffs. That means finishing in fourth place or better. They're a further step on the way, as Cukierki (3-10) falls at home by a score of 68-65.

By the end of the third quarter, Rybnik had built up a 55-44 lead over the home squad, but Cukierki began to pour it on over the last ten minutes. Amber Petillon brought Cukierki to within one, 66-65, with twenty seconds left, but Cukierki was forced to foul Ketia Swanier, who hit her free throws to secure the win for Rybnik.

Rybnik won the battle of shooting 47 percent to 44 percent, including 10 3-point shots. It was a close game statistically, reflecting the closeness of the final result.

Amber Petillon, formerly of Richmond University, led Cukierki with 20 points and 10 rebounds, followed with Ofa Tulikihihifo and Eliza Gołumbiewska with 15 points each. Ashley Key, a graduate of North Carolina State, scored nine points. Tysell Boseman, formerly of Arizona and Felician College, was held scoreless in 20 minutes of play.

Magdalena Radwan led all Rybnik scorers with 20 points. Ketia Swanier scored 15 points for Rybnik, and Kasha Terry scored 13 points and seven rebounds. LaTangela Atkinson was the Tysell Boseman of Rybnik, scoring two points in 21 minutes of play.

Polish Cup Play to Begin

An event which is called the Polish Cup will take place beginning in December. Information from the PLKK website is here.

Ten teams will take place, but as it turns out, CCC Nandyal and Utex Row Rybnik are not only taking place, but have byes. They won't be expected to play any games until January 28th, when they play the winner of Jelenia Góra – Cukierki.

If I can remember that those games are taking place, I'll create write-ups.

PLKK 12/2008 - Rybnik 78, Leszno 72

Even though the PLKK hasn't made it to the halfway point of the season, Rybnik (8-4) has played half of its games. Each team plays all of its league opponents once at home, and once away. Despite their win over a team from Leszno (3-8) on Saturday by a score of 78-72, Utex Row Rybnik is still stuck in sixth place - there are six teams over .500; the rest are under.

Looking at the quarter-by-quarter score, this appears to be a very close game. The game was tied at halftime 44-44, and even though Rybnik had a three point lead at the end of the third quarter - the score was 60-57 - a three-point lead is nothing in basketball. It's one of those games I read about and say, "Boy, I wish Utex Row Rybnik carried some sort of live feed."

Visiting Rybnik outshot home team Leszno 44 percent to 37 percent. Rybnik won the battle of rebounding, but Leszno had three more offensive rebounds than the women of Rybnik. Leszno would send their visitors to the line 24 times, and this would give Rybnik seven extra points - which, if you look at the score, might have been the key to Rybnik's victory.

Two players did the bulk of the heavy lifting for Leszno. The first was Ashley Shields, who played seven games as a member of the Detroit Shock this year. Shields led all players on both teams with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Assisting her was Edyta Krysiewicz with 24 points. DeTrina White, who last played for the New York Liberty in 2005, was a recent acquisition by Leszno and scored six points in her debut.

For Rybnik, Nataliya Trafimava led with 24 points and seven rebounds. Kasha Terry had a great day, scoring 19 points on 7 for 11 shooting and 5 for 5 shooting from the free throw line. She also picked up nine rebounds. Ketia Swanier would score 18 points and seven rebounds in her second game for Rybnik.

LaTangela Atkinson was suffering from a concussion and did not play.

PLKK 11/2008 - Rynbik 78, Pabiance 51

It's official at Rybnik (7-4). Utex Row Rybnik just signed Ketia Swanier to replace Jia Perkins, who terminated her contract with Rybnik a few weeks ago. Swanier was a first round draft pick with the Connecticut Sun this year out of UConn, averaging 9.2 points a game over six games. Rumor had it that some American player had shown up on Wednedsay, but the final word only got out in Poland yesterday.

Swanier's first game with their team would be against league doormat Pabiance (1-10). Pabiance had won one road game in the PLKK this year, but they wouldn't win at Rybnik, who walked away with a 78-51 victory.

Pabiance knew it was going to be a bad day. They were held to four points in the first quarter. (I think the WNBA record for fewest points in a quarter is five.) When you lead by seventeen points after 10 minutes, the only task is not to lose the lead. Pabiance crawled back to being down by 15, going into halftime down 31-16. (Reminds me of an Indiana Fever game.) Rybnik won the third and fourth quarters, never letting Pabiance off the mat.

There's no real analysis of this game. Rybnik shot 58 percent, compared to 28 percent by Pabiance. Only one Pabiance player scored in double digits. You can let rebounding, free throws, and turnovers go if you're outshooting your opponents by thirty percent - and indeed, that's what happened, with Rybnik still leading by 27 when all was said and done.

Aleksandra Chomać led all Rybnik players with 16 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Nataliya Trafimava with 15 points and seven assists. Kasha Terry would score 12 points and seven rebounds in only 17 minutes of play. LaTangela Atkinson would contribute five points.

What about Ketia Swanier? She scored only six points and three assists, but she only played 12 minutes. I suppose after Pabiance went down 21-4 after 10 minutes that you can afford to let your newest player sit down and overcome her jet lag.

Anita Szemraj led Pabiance with 15 points and four rebounds. Viktoria Mircheva also had 11 points and six rebounds for Pabiance.

PLKK 10/2008 - Rybnik 76, Siemens 73

It was the kind of setup you wanted, if you were a team struggling in the middle of the Polish pack. Rybnik (6-4) had a grand total of two weeks off - a bye week, no Eurocup or Euroleague obligations, a chance to shake off the Jia Perkins fiasco - and was fortunate enough to face Siemens (1-9), a team that hasn't won an away game all year. Siemens kept it close but fell 76-73 to Rybnik and fell to 12th place among 13 teams in the PLKK.

It was also the kind of game that Rybnik let get away from them. They were confident going into halftime with a 46-31 lead. (Perhaps, too confident.) Siemens kept it even in the third quarter when Alice Perlińska and Katarzyna Kenig shut down LaTangela Atkinson defensively. Siemens then staged a comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring Rybnik 25-14 with Kenig and Perlińska scoring 20 of those 25 points.

It was the kind of game for which you wish you had play-by-play. With 21 seconds left, and the score 76-73, Siemens only had one four to give. Skillful ball handling by Rybnik let Rybnik hang on to the victory.

Both teams shot well - each team shot 50 percent from the field, but 12 of Rybnik's baskets were 3-pointers. Rebounding for each club was also even. Rybnik made a couple more turnovers than the visiting Siemens team. However, Rybnik sent Siemens to the line 13 times, whereas Rybnik only got seven chances the entire game to hit a free throw - and only hit four of them.

The real player of the game for Rybnik was Natalia Trafimava. Trafimava had 11 points with seven rebound and eight assists. (Siemens had 12 assists for the entire team.) LaTangela Atkinson would add 17 points and 7 rebounds - but also turned the ball over six times. Elżbieta Międzik scored 17 points, four rebounds and three assists.

As for Kasha Terry, she only scored six points and six rebounds. She would only play 23 minutes of the game.

Katarzyna Kenig was the clear leader for Siemens with 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Alicja Perlińska was the clear points leader with 25 points and only the second player to score in double figures for Siemens. Olga Żytomirska also scored eight points and seven rebounds for Siemens.

PLKK 9/2008 - Rybnik 69, MUKS Poznań 58

Rybnik (5-4) had been looking to climb back on top after experiencing four straight losses at one time this season. It was time for MUKS Poznań (2-6) to play the victim, as Utex Row Rybnik had little trouble with a 69-58 victory at home.

MUZS Poznań is the second of two Poznań teams in Poland, and obviously it's not the better one (the other is AZS Poznań). Rybnik outshot Poznań 45 percent to 30 percent, and teams rarely (if ever) win when they shoot 30 percent...unless maybe it's in junior high.

MUZS Poznań was outrebounded 43 to 37, but in the important offensive rebounds category, MUZS Poznań had 14 of those to Rybnik's seven. Furthermore, MUKS Poznań won the battle of turnovers.

It was a good effort all around for Rybnik. Elżbieta Międzik led Rybnik with 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, and Jia Perkins scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds. Kasha Terry would score 10 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes. LaTangela Atkinson would score six points.

For MUZS Poznań, Jennifer Rushing led the team with 25 points. Rushing graduated from Delta State in 2008. Rushing had seven steals, but also had five turnovers. Djenebou Sissoko had 15 points and nine rebounds, and Keila Beachem added six points. (She was definitely an American player, but if you know what college she graduated from, leave it in the comments.)

PLKK 8/2008 - Rybnik 67, Toruń 64

After four straight losses, Rybnik's (4-4) season had headed into a talespin, and they would have to go to (3-4) Toruń, which was looking to get its head above water. Down 57-45, Rybnik turned it up in the fourth quarter and managed to break a four-game losing streak by winning 67-64.

Rybnik recovered its shooting touch, outshooting Rybnik 45 percent to 34 percent. Rybnik would need that shooting. They could only match Toruń on rebounds (33-32, Toruń) and Toruń led in offensive rebounding 11-5. Rybnik's free throw shooting was also horrible, shooting only 57 percent to Toruń's 78 percent.

The decisive moment in the game - Rybnik starting the fourth quarter with a 13-0 run. Rybnik wanted to win this game, and they did win.

Nine Rybnik players would actually take the floor, but only six of them would actually score. The lion's share of the scoring was done by Rybnik's three American players.

Kasha Terry led all players with 16 points and six rebounds. Jia Perkins scored 14 points, six assists and had eight steals in the game. LaTangela Atkinson had eight points and seven rebounds. Elżbieta Międzik and Nataliya Trafimava each had 10 points for Rybnik.

Sheena Moore, a graduate of UNLV in 2006, scored 15 points and six assist. Jacqueline Moore, who might be a Canadian player, scored 13 points. Monika Krawiec added 14 points for Toruń.

PLKK 7/2008 - Gorzow 82, Rybnik 80

Undefeated Gorzow (6-0) came to visit a Utex Row Rybnik (3-4) team that had lost three straight games. It came down right to the fourth quarter but Gorzow would remain undefeated, beating Rybnik by two points on the road to remain in first place in the PLKK.

Rybnik started out hot, but Gorzow began a run in the second quarter to catch up and lead 20-18 after ten minutes. Gorzow continued strong in the second quarter, leading by over 10 points at one point of the game and leading 44-36 at the half.

After rest for a team that would only play seven players during the entire game, Rybnik began to come back, closing to within one point in the third quarter, then finally leading 56-55 at one point. However, Lindsay Taylor hit two free throws for Gorzow and took a 59-56 lead after the third quarter.

It would be Rybnik's job to try to close the gap. They came within one point, 67-66 with just over four minutes left, but Gorzow kept Rybnik at arms length.

Down 74-78, Rybnik hit a three-point shot to close back to within one, with Gorzow leading 78-77 with 15 seconds left. Rybnik was forced to foul Anna Breitreiner hit two free twos to take an 80-77 lead.

With only four seconds left, Rybnik again couldn't make the shot. This time, they sent Justyna Żurowska to the free throw line, who make both free throws to put the game out of reach. LaTangela Atkinson hit a last second three point shot as time expired, but it wasn't enough as Gorzow won 82-80.

The game was evenly matched in just about every aspect - field goal percentage, offensive rebounding (with Utex Row having a slight edge), and turnovers. Why did they lose?

Most likely, because of free throws. Utex Row was 9-for-20 at the free throw line, a lousy 45 percent. Whereas Gorzow was 20-for-23, or 86 percent. This game was a prime example of a game being lost by free throw shooting.

I've still not been able to learn why only seven players ever take the court for Rybnik. Radwan, Moszkowicz, Stanek and Przekop did not play. Przekop has played three minutes all year, and Moszkowicz and Stanek haven't played much longer. Radwan has played 66 minutes in four games. I suspect Rybnik's season will be a disaster if seven players have to bear the load.

Kasha Terry had a grand total of three points in five rebounds. She only took four shots. The big gns were Elżbieta Międzik with 20 points and Jia Perkins had 21 points. LaTangela Atkins scored 14 for Rybnik.

As for Gorzow, Linsday Taylor had a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor was born in California and is a tall figure (6' 8") in Polish basketball.

Anna Breitreiner scored 20 points for Gorzow. Shala Crawford, a player from Life University, scored 2 points in six minutes of play.

Utex Row remains in fifth place in the PLKK standings. The top eight teams go to the postseason in Poland. If I find pictures, I'll post them.
