Breakin' The Glass

Breakin' the Glass is a documentary about the American Basketball League. For those new to the WNBA, the American Basketball League is the league that came just before the WNBA started and briefly competed with the W. Some of the footage in this documentary is just priceless - it's very hard to find actual ABL game footage. (See a very young Katie Smith!)

All three parts of the documentary are on YouTube. See it while you still can!

For those who didn't want to read all that text below, the YouTube clip above sums it up.

Euroleague Quarterfinals 1/2009 - Krakow 78, Brno 74

Iziane Castro Marques was definitely needed in the Euroleague quarterfinals series against Brno - everyone was going to be needed, because most Euroleague observers figured this to be a close game. Krakow came back from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter and an exciting final two minutes ended with Krakow winning 78-74 in Poland in front of 2000 spectators.

The game report, box score, and play-by-play is here. There's no gallery of pics, not yet, anyway, but we do have...some film! (Check out Iziane Castro Marques at about 44 seconds in.)

Brno took the lead early in the first quarter but Krakow came back to tie the score at 19-19. DeWanna Bonner and Hollie Grima provided the offense punch for the Czechs and led 43-34 at halftime. Brno maintained the two-point lthrough most of the third quarter and led 62-56 at the end of thirty minutes.

Krakow came back. They held Brno to just five points in the first five minutes of the final quarter and retook the lead, 70-69. With four minutes left, Eva Viteckova hit a 3-pointer for Brno that tied the game at 72-72.

For the next four minutes, both teams tried to make something happen. Brno could get the rebounds, but couldn't take a shot. Krakow took shot after shot, and missed most of them. However, with Krakow up 76-74, Janell Burse hit a jumper with 16 seconds left that put Krakow up 78-74. With 10 seconds left, DeWanna Bonner tried to hit a 3-pointer for Brno, but Krakow got the rebound and the win.

Brno was led by Eva Viteckova's 22 points. DeWanna Bonner scored 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Taj McWilliams scored eight points and 10 rebounds.

Krakow had three players score 18 points. Janlle Burse shot 8-for-11 with 12 rebounds; Ewelina Kobryn shot 8-for-12 with 11 rebounds.

Iziane Castro Marques had 18 points in 26 minutes:

18 points
7-for-17 shooting
2-for-7 from 3-point range
3 rebounds
26 minutes

Ros Casares/Rivas Ecopolis Game on YouTube

The FEB - the governing body of baskeball in Spain - has placed the entirety of the Ros Casares/Rivas Ecopolis match of YouTube. El Ros won the match 73-56.

It's a hard, no-frills slog. There's no scoreboard to watch, one camera, and no way to identify the players without looking at the box score - although Erika de Souza is hard to miss. What's more interesting is a look at Rivas Ecopolis's home court - there are no bleachers on three sides of the court. However, the small crowd provides noise that could equal a WNBA game.

If you want to see the game in a larger size than the one offered by this blog, go to this YouTube link.

The All American Red Heads: "Play Ball!"

RebKell poster Luuuc has helped put together this YouTube clip of the All American Red Heads in action with footage provided by All American Red Heads historian John Molina.

Let me set it up before you: before there was even the inkling of women's basketball, there was the barnstorming All-American Red Heads.

According to their Wikipedia article, they played from 1936 to around 1986. Their season consisted of about 200 games a year.

Part basketball players, part entertainers, the clip below only gives you a hint of what they were capable of and provokes the saddest of questions: what might have been?

Teresa Edwards Highlight Reel

This was created by "Atlbryson" and was linked over at the Painel do Basquete Femininio blog.

Why highlight Teresa Edwards?

* Born in Cairo, Georgia
* Two time All-American at Georgia, two Final Four appearances
* #5 was retired at Georgia
* Played forAtlanta and Philadelphia in the ABL
* Played for Minnesota in the WNBA
* #22 on Sports Illustrated's list of "100 Greatest Female Athletes of the 20th Century"
* Four Olympic Gold Medals in women's basketball, and
* Some want Edwards to replace Marynell Meadors if it ever comes to that. At least, I've heard rumors.

I really enjoyed the footage from her years at Georgia and from the ABL. The clip is great.
